CalTrans rejects grant request. Regional Parks to try again in 2013.
You might recall that in early 2012, Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and our friends at Sebastopol Trailmakers worked to raise a $19,000 local matching fund to enable Sonoma County Regional Parks to apply for a CalTrans grant to do the required feasibility studies for the planned Petaluma Sebastopol Trail.
Thanks to many of you, our efforts to raise the match were successful. However, in spite of the outstanding community support for the project, CalTrans opted not to fund Regional Park's request this year. Parks had also submitted a proposal to fund the study of the planned Central Sonoma Valley Trail, which CalTrans also rejected.
Grant funds to pay for feasibility studies are rare, so the CalTrans planning grants fund is very competitive.
We are pleased to report that Regional Parks plans to resubmit both projects in 2013.
If you donated to the Petaluma Sebastopol Trail matching fund, we will hold your donation until CalTrans announces the 2013 awards. If CalTrans funds the project, your donation will be turned over to parks to help pay for the feasibility study. If CalTrans again rejects the proposal, we will, depending on the preference you indicated at the time of your donation, either: a) refund your donation to you; or b) move the donation into Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition's general fund to support our advocacy programs.
Once again, we thank all of you who donated to the fund. Thanks to Regional Parks for working so hard on this wonderful project (and on the Central Sonoma Valley Trail), and for keeping us informed about its status. Let's keep our fingers crossed for 2013!
