2024 Bike Project of the Year: North McDowell Boulevard

There were many excellent bike infrastructure improvements made over the past year, making it hard to choose a winner. But as the biggest transformation over the longest stretch of roadway, the improvements along North McDowell Boulevard  in Petaluma rose to the top.

The project runs almost two miles, from Old Redwood Highway to Sunrise Parkway.

Before the improvements, many cyclists avoided North McDowell due to high traffic, large trucks, high speeds. With narrower vehicle lanes, upgraded Class IIB and Class IV bike lanes, new sidewalks, curb cuts, crosswalks, and a pedestrian refuge island, the experience of riding or walking North McDowell has vastly improved. This is what we mean when we ask for Complete Streets!
