On July 2, a cyclist was struck by a driver towing a travel trailer on southbound Highway 1 near Goat Rock. She was taken to Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries. A similar incident – cyclist hit by trailer – occurred in the same location on July 12.
In both cases, the driver did not stop. Did they even know they hit someone?!?
The width of the Highway 1 shoulder varies along this route, quite narrow in places. There is NOT room for safe passing in many places. (In these circumstances – where there is NOT room for a vehicle to pass you with three feet of clearance – it is far safer to take the whole lane!)
Besides widening the road, what changes might make this highway safer for cyclists? Share your thoughts with Caltrans and/or 5th District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins.
