As part of this year’s Bike Month festivities, SCBC hosted a team-oriented bike challenge, encouraging riders to rack up the miles through commuting, running errands and recreation. While the Bay Area hosts a successful individual challenge during Bike Month, we appreciate the team model as an effective way of encouraging new riders through the support of their teammates.
In Sonoma County, we were thrilled to see 145 participants organize themselves into about 26 teams. Collectively, the group rode a total of 19,500 miles and recorded almost 2,400 trips! At the start of the challenge, 20 riders reported that they typically ride 0-1 times per week, and we are especially impressed that three of them recorded 55 or more trips during the month – this is the kind of increase in riding that we were hoping for!
Since our goal was to encourage riding for everyday transportation, we weighted the point system in favor of trips versus miles and toward group achievement versus individual achievement. That said, we’re honoring both teams and individuals with SCBC swag and certificates.
Thank you to our sponsor Sonoma Clean Power, and congratulations to everyone who participated!
