SCBC is working very closely with the Sonoma County Transportation and Public Works Department to develop an updated bicycle safety education campaign. The County’s campaign will serve to revise their 2002-03 safety campaign with fresh, clear and compelling messaging. It will include traditional advertising and public outreach methods, such as radio public service announcements (PSAs) and billboard space, as well as updating of website and social media strategies.
Tentatively scheduled to launch in May, the bicycle safety education campaign will urge drivers to be more aware, to drive wisely, legally and with caution and respect for other road users. The campaign will also attempt to “humanize” cyclists by identifying us in print and media materials by who we are in our everyday lives, professionally and personally (mother, student, physician, teacher, grandparent, etc.).
In addition to working closely with the County on their bicycle safety education campaign, SCBC is also in the process of funding the development of a professional-level PSA video to bring much needed attention to the 3-Foot Passing Law and to humanize cyclists in the same manner as the County’s campaign. Once available, we will be sharing this video far and wide through social media, our partner organizations and agencies, and through all other possible outlets.
We’re very excited to be working on these endeavors to help increase safety on our roadways; however, there is a considerable expense involved. If you would like to make a donation to be used toward the development of the PSA video, your donations would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made here. On the donation form, please type “Bicycle Safety Video” in the notes field. Thank you in advance from all of us at SCBC for helping to make our roads safer for all users!
