Thousands of students strapped on helmets, kicked up kick stands, and fired up their feet to walk or roll to school on Wednesday, October 5th for International Walk and Roll to School Day. This year marked the 10th anniversary of SCBC’s Safe Routes to School program producing this countywide event! Nearly 70 schools registered to participate this year, and reports coming in so far* indicate that over 30% of students in attendance walked or rolled to school. This is, on average, nearly double the number who utilize active transportation on a typical day! The top five bicycling sites were Sonoma Mountain Elementary School in Petaluma (100 bicyclists), Windsor Middle School (88), St. Francis Solano in Sonoma (78), Live Oak Charter in Petaluma (62), and Hidden Valley Elementary School (43). We were thrilled that the Press Democrat featured dozens of smiling bicycling students at Sonoma Mountain, in their coverage this year, including the bike train pictured in this article!
