… to run for the SCBC Board of Directors!
SCBC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by our members each January for a term of two years. We currently have enough continuing directors and candidates to meet our bylaws‘ minimum of seven members; this January’s election could seat up to four additional directors.
The Board of Directors has three primary roles:
- Fundraising: Fundraising is the most important responsibility of a board member. Board members are expected to use their connections to spur interest in and support of the organization they serve. Board fundraising activities may include major donor solicitations, sponsorship solicitations, membership recruitment, and efforts to boost event registrations.
- Oversight of Programs: The board is responsible for general oversight of the organization’s programs. This role does not extend to the operations behind the programs, but does include fiduciary oversight.
- Strategic Planning: The board is the primary force behind the organization’s strategic planning decisions. Board members create/ update the strategic plan and evaluate the implementation plan presented by staff.
A Board member is expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in monthly Board meetings as well as any Board committee meetings as assigned.
- To participate in an annual one-day Board retreat to address strategic planning issues.
- To serve as ambassadors of the Bike Coalition and work to actively promote its values through proactive interactions with the public.
- Make a financial contribution of an amount that is meaningful to them.
The existing Board recently reviewed the skills, connections, and demographics of its current members and determined what is needed to create diversity and balance so we can better represent and serve our diverse community.
Demographics:
- We have a good balance in age distribution.
- We are lacking in racial/ethnic diversity.
- Another woman or two would bring us into gender balance.
- We have no representation from the Sonoma Valley, the West County, or north of Healdsburg.
Skill Sets and Community Connections
Our current members have a wide variety of connections and skills but there are a few we are lacking:
- Public safety (we’d like to grow our influence re: traffic safety issues, how cyclists are viewed/treated by LEOs, why emergency responders argue against protected bike lanes, etc.)
- Faith communities
- Organized labor
- Philanthropy/fundraising
- Law, especially HR
- A CPA
