SCBC is joining Bikeable Santa Rosa, the Regional Climate Protection Authority, Santa Rosa Junior College, Generation Housing, Santa Rosa YIMBY, and other community organizations to participate in this year’s national Week Without Driving.
This challenge was started by Disability Rights Washington to educate elected officials and decision makers about the barriers and challenges that non-drivers face. They were joined by America Walks two years later and the challenge is now nationwide.
While many of us choose not to drive cars for environmental reasons, roughly 30% of our neighbors cannot drive due to disability, age, or financial circumstances. The Week Without Driving challenge gives participants a chance to experience what it is like for these folks on a daily basis, and what improvements in our transportation system are needed to ensure equal mobility access.
We’ve invited all of our local officials as well as the general public to participate. The challenge asks
that you not drive anywhere for one week. You can walk, bike, take transit, ask someone to drive you, or even take Uber or Lyft. If for some reason you have to drive, use the time to reflect on what you would have done if driving wasn’t an option.
You can share your experiences with other participants via the Sonoma County Week Without Driving Facebook page and join the October 5th Transportation Futures visioning session.
